Noctilucent Cloud
Lake Merritt, Oakland, California
"The rarest cloud in the world," declared the news headlines on the morning this unusually bright and shimmery cloud appeared over Northern California. Formed at high altitude in cold conditions, noctilucent clouds are created when water droplets crystallize around dust particles. The frozen matter shimmers and sparkles with reflected sunlight.
I was lucky enough to be looking outside in the predawn hour when this magnificently lovely cloud appeared. And while the usual altitude for noctilucent clouds is around 50 miles / 80 km, it seemed to be hovering right above Lake Merritt and the Oakland skyline. A truly unforgettable sight, I am thoroughly pleased to share this collective memory with other nephology enthusiasts. © Rain Hayes
