Magnolias

I say this every year about a lot of different flowers, but this spring’s magnolias were absolutely magnificent. Perhaps in an unconscious tribute to my favorite painter, Vincent Van Gogh, I made this image looking up into the canopy of the oldest and largest tree in San Francisco Botanical Garden’s extensive magnolia collection. Although it may appear to be a visible light image, it’s actually false-color infrared. © Rain Hayes
