Snowy Egret
Lake Merritt, California
On a calm and misty morning, an egret appears to passively observe the day from the shallows of Lake Merritt. Gulls fly overhead and coots float nearby, as if meeting up for an interspecies group breakfast. This scene is actually just a few steps from my front door in the big city, but makes me feel like I'm on a remote lagoon. I love photography for its ability to transcend the immediate and transport me to worlds of beauty and serenity. © Rain Hayes
