Two New Contest Awards

December 23, 2023

Two of my images have been awarded prizes in the 2022 “Life in Another Light” photography contest sponsored by Kolari Vision.

A full moon rises over three red oak trees atop a diagonal rideline in late-day shadow.

A rising nearly-full moon is illuminated by the late-day sun as a long shadow crawls over the foothills of California’s Diablo Range. The trio of oak trees along the sunlit ridge, about to be consumed by nightfall, felt like a picture waiting to happen. I caught it with my camera just moments before a surprise bank of fog swept over the hill behind me, putting a swift end to golden hour and changing the mood completely.

Valley Ridge With Waxing Gibbous Moon earned second place in the Infrared Landscape category. This image encapsulates a lovely memory of a summer afternoon hike in our gorgeous East Bay hills under a nearly full moon.

A monochrome version of Poof

Clematis Poof, a macro image of clematis seed, won an honorable mention in the Black & White category. In its dried form, the clematis seed head’s feathery wisps form a swirling globe – until a gust of wind separates and carries each tendrilled seed away to start a new life in the spring. A tiny poof of order and chaos lives at the heart of every clematis blossom.

These prizes both come with some great new infrared gear that I’ve had my eye on for a while. I’m honored to have my work considered and chosen for these awards among many excellent entries from around the world. Thank you, Kolari!
